Ultrasound Scan

An ultrasound scan is a safe, painless imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of the body. It does not use radiation, making it ideal for monitoring pregnancy and other sensitive conditions.

Why It's Done:

  • Assess blood flow and detect clots using Doppler ultrasound

  • Guide biopsies and needle procedures

  • Diagnose conditions affecting soft tissues

Common Areas Scanned:

  • Obstetric and gynecological exams
  • Abdominal and pelvic imaging
  • Thyroid, breast, and testicular evaluations
  • Vascular studies (arteries and veins)

What to Expect:

A clear gel is applied to the skin, and a handheld device called a transducer is moved over the area. The scan is painless and usually takes 20–45 minutes.

Preparation:

Depends on the type of exam. You may be asked to fast or have a full bladder. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easy access to the area being scanned.
